Performance Metrics And KPIs Are Not Reality

Let's talk about snakes.

In colonial India, the British government had a problem: too many cobras. Their solution was logical. Linear. Metric-driven. They offered a cash bounty for every dead cobra.

The goal? Fewer snakes. The metric? Cobra skins.

But the British forgot they weren't managing a "snake problem." They were managing human biology.

People realized that catching wild cobras was hard, but breeding them was easy. So, they started cobra farms. They bred snakes to kill them, just to collect the "KPI" payout.

When the government realized the scam and stopped the bounty, the breeders did the only logical thing left: They released the now-worthless snakes into the streets.

The result? The cobra population increased. The metric was a success. The reality was a catastrophe. This is The Cobra Effect. And it is currently poisoning your company.

The Dashboard Is a Survival Threat

We talk about Performance Metrics and KPIs as "alignment tools." In the nervous system of your employees, they are something else. They are threat indicators.

When a bonus, a promotion, or a "performance review" is tied to a single number—NPS, AHT, Sales Quotas—the brain undergoes a shift. It moves from the Executive Control Network (complex problem solving) to the Salience Network (survival).

From a neuroscience perspective, this creates Cognitive Tuning. The brain becomes a flashlight in a dark room. It fixates on the "Green Zone" of the dashboard. Everything else—the customer's tone of voice, the employee's integrity, the long-term health of the brand—disappears into the shadows.

You Are Biologically Optimizing for Dishonesty

When you measure a call center agent on Average Handle Time (AHT), you aren't measuring efficiency. You are measuring how fast they can get rid of a human being.

The brain learns: The human on the phone is an obstacle to my metric.

The result? They hang up "accidentally." They provide "band-aid" solutions. They stop listening. They are breeding cobras. And you are paying for the skins.

The Death of Empathy (The Oxytocin Gap)

Here is the H2H truth: Empathy is a biological luxury.

It requires the Parasympathetic Nervous System to be active. It requires a sense of safety. When a leader screams about a "Red KPI," the body enters a Sympathetic (Fight/Flight) state.

In this state, Oxytocin—the hormone of trust and connection—is suppressed. Biologically, your employees cannot feel for your customers while they are terrified of their dashboards.

The H2H Experiment: The Metric Autopsy

Don't look at your dashboard. Look at your people's eyes. Ask yourself—honestly:

The "Failure" Test

If my team hits this goal perfectly, could we still be failing the human being on the other side?

The "Incentive" Test

Am I paying my team to solve problems, or am I paying them to make the data look "pretty" while the house burns down?

The "Safety" Test

Does this metric encourage my team to look at the customer, or are they staring at the dashboard like a prey animal staring at a predator?

If you are rewarding the "Cobra Skin" and ignoring the "Snake," you aren't leading. You are just managing a delusion.

Final Reflection

Metrics are not reality. They are a digital anesthesia we use to numb ourselves to the complexity of human experience.

When you mistake the map for the territory, you don't just get lost. You lead your people into a void.

You can measure the transaction. But you cannot measure the Trust. You can measure the "Handle Time." But you cannot measure the Empathy.

And the moment you try to turn a human connection into a KPI, you haven't "scaled" it. You've killed it.
